Dance

The dance program at NSA is designed to introduce the techniques and art of dance to train students at all levels and experiences. Many of our students have received scholarships for college and enter the professional world of dance.

Courses and instructors are subject to change.

Tiny Steps

Ages 3-4
Saturdays, 10:00AM, 1 hour
Just added! Fridays, 5:30PM, 1 hour
This is a fun and energetic introduction to ballet, creative movement and combination tap incorporating basic terminology with the positions of the feet, hands and body.

Tiny Steps

Ages 5-7
Saturdays, 11:00AM, 1 hour
Just added! Fridays, 5:30PM, 1 hour
This class will follow a closer format of an actual ballet class to include basic barre exercise and center practice. Children will also demonstrate fun skills and combinations traveling across the floor.

Bouncing Boys / Ballet Levels 1&2 Boys Only

Ages 5-12
Fridays, 6:30 PM, 1 hour
The foundation of all dance forms. Body placement, flexibility, balance, alignment, strength and technique are achieved through barre and center floor work.

Children's Ballet

The foundation of all dance forms. Body placement, flexibility, balance, alignment, strength and technique are achieved through barre and center floor work.

Ballet 1

Ages 8-12
Tuesdays, 5:30PM, 1 hour
Physical discipline, general body awareness, and control coordinating with elementary technique and terminology.

Ballet 2

Ages 13-Adult
Tuesdays, 6:30PM, 1 hour
Understanding the relationship between music, rhythm and controlled movement with proper ballet technique. New and more complex material will be taught at an accelerated pace. Student will begin to learn basic ballet history and develop a knowledge and great appreciation of the great ballets, classical music and famous dancers.

Children Tap

Ages 7-12
Fridays, 6:30PM, 1 hour
This class introduces students to the basic rhythmic movements of tap using age appropriate movements and music. This is the preparatory class which will teach students the basic vocabulary used in tap.

Tap/Dance for Musical Theater

Ages 13-Adult
Fridays, 5:30PM, 1 hour
Designed for the beginner or a person seeking a refresher on the basics. Students will learn tap techniques and combinations encompassing the must-know tap basics and theatrical character needed to captivate the audience.

Jazz

An exciting and ever evolving dance form full of rhythm, syncopation, passion and life. Classes explore body isolations of the head, shoulders, ribcage, feet and arms and encourage individual expression and the development of personal style. Jazz can be powerful and percussive or expressive and lyrical. Ever evolving, jazz dance is taught with the music of today together with the classical jazz of yesterday. Classes teach basic jazz dance technique, terminology and movement quality with an emphasis on proper execution of jazz isolations, rhythms and style performed to contemporary music.

Jazz 1/2

Ages 6-13
Mondays, 5:30PM, 90 minutes
This is an energetic class that will include stretching and cardiovascular warm Up along with basic body isolations and coordination exercises using upbeat And popular music.

Jazz 3

Ages 13-Adult
Mondays, 7PM, 1 hour
We challenge our students with many different forms of jazz, all high energy But with different styles. These classes are popular with all ages and provide And added benefit of cardiovascular exercise due to the high level of energy Exerted. Jazz class is a fun and fast paced mixture of various techniques.

Modern

Explores individual body movement, space, shapes, patterns and the dancer's own creativity with emphasis on the freedom of expression. This form of dance is inspired by nature, music, art, and human emotions. It emphasizes the use of the floor work. Teachers incorporate an eclectic blend of contemporary and post-modern movement into their classes.

Modern 1

Ages 8-12
Mondays, 5:30PM, 1 hour
Students experience basic terminology, movement and forms with emphasis on technique.

Modern 2

Ages 13-Adult
Mondays, 6:30PM, 1 hour
Students experience more challenges with expression, balance and longer creative combinations.

Dance Tech Division

Ages 9-Adult
This division is for students in the professional tract of study. The students must audition for these classes or be recommended by their previous teachers and the Director of Dance.

Children's Workshop

Ages 9-12
Saturdays, 2PM, 1 hour
A more advanced workshop combining skills from previous level classes and correlating steps to lengthy and complex combinations with correct technique, extensive terminology and knowledge of the art of ballet itself.

Ballet Tech

Ages 13-Adult
Tuesdays, 7:30PM, 1 hour
A more advanced workshop combining skills from previous level classes and correlating steps to lengthy and complex combinations with correct technique, extensive terminology and knowledge of the art of ballet itself.

Dance Workshop

Ages 13-Adult
Fridays, 7:30PM, 1 hour
A more advanced workshop combining skills of Modern and Jazz from previous level classes and correlating steps to lengthy and complex combinations with correct technique, extensive terminology and knowledge of the art of ballet itself.

Newark School of Arts Dance Company (NSADC)

Ages 18-Adult
Saturdays, 6PM, 2 hours
Professional group of adults representing most advanced vigorous training. Provides a diverse repertoire intended to showcase well-rounded artistic dancers. Offers an intense artistic experience through all artistic and theatrical techniques.

Cultural Dance

Cultural Dance at NSA emphasizes the development of talents and interests through exposure and training in a variety of other cultural societies. Classes in African, Latin and the joint influences and trends of these two cultures on our American society (Hip Hop) are offered.

Hip Hop 1

Ages 9-12
Wednesdays, 5:30PM, 1 hour
Hip Hop dance refers to choreographed dance styles primarily danced to hip hop music. This includes a wide range of styles notably breaking, locking and popping which were developed in the 1970s by Black and Latino Americans.

Hip Hop 2

Ages 13-Adult
Wednesdays, 6:30PM, 1 hour
Hip Hop dance refers to choreographed dance styles primarily danced to hip hop music. This includes a wide range of styles notably breaking, locking and popping which were developed in the 1970s by Black and Latino Americans. This class is for students who have completed one year of Hip Hop.

Salsa

Ages 13-Adult
Thursdays, 6:30PM, 1 hour
"Dancing improves your social life!" Have fun learning a very energetic Latin dance full of hot quick, quick, slow rhythms, fancy spins, crisp turns and sharp movement. Opportunities to bring it to the dance floor will be arranged. Couples and singles of all levels welcomed.

African Dance

Ages 5-Adult
Thursdays, 6:30PM, 1 hour
Learn traditional rhythms songs and West African Dances from Senegal, Mali, and Guinea while having fun meeting others. Class begins with a warm up progressing into high energetic dancing to live drums. Beginner level to advanced are welcomed.
